Apocalypse Weird: The Serenity Strain
by Chris Pourteau
I was gifted a copy of this book at the end of April, and it suited my writer’s block to jump right in. I love reading outside of my own genre when I’m blocked. It lets my mind drift in a different direction. I’ll be the first to say that this book probably isn’t for everyone, but I’m a huge fan of the setting, the imperfect characters and the narrative overall. From my Amazon review:
I read this book in a little over a day. There are definitely some bloody, difficult moments to read, but none of it was excessive. Lauryn is a well-layered protagonist and Martensen is a terrifying protagonist. I’m looking forward to the next story. Porteau’s writing is strong, his characterization excellent, and the level of background exactly right. Great read!
If you’re looking for something dark and twisty, and you’re as big of a fan of that moment of dystopian transition as I am, The Serenity Strain is definitely worth a look. It’s a fast read, and a great buy on Kindle.
